Default MIDI Routings on mioXL: How to INSTANTLY start using your mioXL

Just bought a brand-new mioXL MIDI interface and can’t wait to use it? In this blog post, we’re going to show you how to find and use the default MIDI routings so that you can get started with your mioXL right away.

Getting Started

To get started using your mioXL, connect your interface to your computer using the USB-DAW port. Then, if you haven’t already, download and install Auracle for X-Series, our free and easy-to-use software that allows you to control and configure all your audio and MIDI interfaces from iConnectivity.

Next, open Auracle for X-Series and click the tab “MIDI Routing.”

You’ll see that there are two sections: sources and destinations (newer versions of Auracle for X-Series say Input and Output). Sources are devices that send MIDI and destinations are devices that receive MIDI.

Finding the Default Routings for mioXL

Now we’re ready to find the default routings for your mioXL interface. For this example, let’s plug a 5-PIN MIDI controller into the DIN 1 input on our mioXL. On the mioXL this input is on the back of the interface.

Click DIN 1 in Auracle for X-Series under the “Sources” tab. This shows you the default routings for DIN 1. You can see in the image below that by default anything plugged into DIN 1 will show up in the DIN 1 input in your DAW, and will automatically be routed to RTP 1.

What about if you plug your device or instrument into DIN 8? Will it show up as DIN 8 in your DAW? It sure will! That’s because DIN 1 through DIN 8 have all been pre-routed to DIN 1-8 in your interface.

Using your mioXL straight out of the box is easy with the default routings. Imagine that you just set up your mioXL and want to use it for the very first time. If you were to plug your keyboard into the DIN 1 port on your mioXL, then you would find it in DIN port 1 on your software. If you plugged it into DIN port 2 on your mioXL, you would find it in DIN port 2 on your software. If you plugged it into DIN port 3 on your mioXL, you would find it on DIN port 3 on your software, etc.… You get the idea.

This allows you to get up and running quickly without needing to change any defaults on your interface.

For example, here’s how the MioXL shows up by default in Ableton Live’s MIDI Preferences.

USB Default Routings

In addition to the DIN ports, you may have noticed some USB ports on your new mioXL interface. It’s easy to find the default routings for these, too.

In Auracle for X-Series, click “USB Hosted Devices/Instruments.” Although there are 10 different host ports, you’ll see that host ports 1-7 are all pre-mapped. This means that if you were to plug a USB MIDI controller into any of these 7 host ports, it would show up in their respective host ports in your DAW by default.

Making USB Host Port Reservations

If you’re only planning on plugging in one USB-MIDI controller, you’re good to go! But if you plug in more than one USB-MIDI controller, how do you know which one is which HST port? That’s where making a USB-Host Port Reservation comes in handy!

Connect a USB-MIDI Controller to your MioXL, using one of the USB connections on the interface, or connect multiple USB-MIDI controllers to a powered USB hub and connect to one of the USB ports on your interface. In my example, I have only one MIDI controller connected to my mioXL.

Click the “USB Host Reservation” button.

You’ll see all the Host Ports on your mioXl to the left. Choose which port you want your MIDI controller associated with by choosing it from the list on the right. I’m going to choose Host 1 for my MIDI controller I have selected. This means every time I re-connect this controller to my interface, it will always show up as Host 1.

As a reminder, USB Host ports 1-7 are automatically routed to show up in your DAW, so no need to adjust your routings after you reserve your host ports. For example, you can see Host 1-7 in Ableton Live’s MIDI preferences.

Default Output Routings

If you want to route MIDI the other way around — from your DAW to your mioXL — here are the default routings for those outputs. Go to “Device Port to Computer/DAW,” under “Sources” and you’ll see that DIN 1-8 will automatically route to their respective DIN 1-8 ports on your mioXL.

For example, if you choose to route out of DIN 8 on Ableton Live, that output will come out of DIN 8 on your mioXL.

Now, go try it!

The best way to get a hang of your new mioXL is to plug it into your DAW and start using it. Soon, you’ll discover how easy it is to get it up and running just by letting the default routings do all the work for you.
