How to Set Up and Use a USB MIDI Controller with Your PlayAUDIO1U
Using a USB MIDI Controller with Your PlayAUDIO1U
Let’s talk about setting up and using a USB MIDI controller with our PlayAUDIO1U.
Before starting, ensure your PlayAUDIO1U is powered and connected to your computer. In this tutorial, we're only using one computer, but keep in mind the power of the PlayAUDIO1U is it's ability to work across multiple computers.
Setting up a USB MIDI controller with your PlayAUDIO1U is a straightforward way to streamline control across redundant playback systems. Whether you're running a live show or rehearsing in the studio, adding a MIDI controller provides hands-on control and improves workflow stability.
Step 1: Connect Your USB MIDI Controller
Start by connecting your USB MIDI controller to a USB cable, then plug that cable into the USB Host port on the front of your PlayAUDIO1U. This port not only enables communication between devices—it also powers your controller.
Step 2: Open Auracle for X-Series
On Computer A, open Auracle for X-Series, our free control software for configuring iConnectivity hardware. Navigate to the USB Host Reservation tab. This section lets you manage all USB MIDI connections coming into your PlayAUDIO1U.
You’ll see up to eight available USB host slots. Think of these like dedicated lanes for your controllers. For this setup, with just one MIDI controller, select Host 1 and assign it to your device. That controller will now always be recognized on that host slot, maintaining a consistent and stable configuration.
Step 3: Map Your MIDI Controller in the DAW
With the controller connected and assigned in Auracle, open your DAW. In this example, we're using Ableton Live, but the process works similarly in other DAWs.
Go to Preferences → Link Tempo MIDI, where you'll see PlayAUDIO1U listed along with its host ports. Enable the MIDI input you assigned your USB-Host port to, in this case USB Host 1. You can now map functions like Play and Stop to buttons on your MIDI controller.
Map the same controls on Computer A and Computer B so they respond in sync. Pressing Play or Stop on your MIDI controller will now trigger both systems simultaneously—ensuring perfectly synchronized, redundant playback.
That’s how simple it is to set up a USB MIDI controller with your PlayAUDIO1U. With just one USB connection, you gain stable, hands-on control over your entire live performance setup.
